Album Review: Donna Summer – Love To Love You Donna

Love To Love You Donna - Album Review

I’ve no strong, solid ‘YES’ feeling toward this collection of remixes, released in the memory of the late Donna Summer. The idea of some of the biggest names in electronic music reworking famous tracks by the woman many believe to have started off the whole thing, is a winner. In reality, I’m not 100 per cent sure.

But I don’t want to focus on negatives as I’m a half glass full kind of girl. So in respect for Donna, her fierceness and how fabulous she was, I’m listing my highlights. There are a few. The rest, figure out for yourself.

Dim All The Lights (Duke Dumont Remix)

‘Dim All The Lights’ will get hipsters on the dance floor due to Duke Dumont’s jacking house treatment but the lady behind the looping vocals proves good music existed before the trend setters learnt about it. I’m a big fan of jacking house and garage so I’ll be joining the scenesters, shouting the full history of Donna Summer’s career down their ears.

Hot Stuff (Frankie Knuckles and Eric Kupper as Director’s Cut Signature Mix)

How does one transform a hen party, anniversary do and wedding disco staple (but a fantastic piece of music all the same) into a club-worthy track? Memories of the dancing in a circle dance with your aunties come flooding back once the vocal begins but before you know it, the nineties-style synths, drums and melodic loop of the Director’s Cut Signature Mix has you in a blissful state; evoking dancing with some actual hot stuff on a terrace in Ibiza instead.

Love Is In Control (Finger On The Trigger) [Chromeo & Oliver Remix]

80s homage-payers Chromeo have teamed up with the equally era loving Oliver to give the Grammy award-winning original a new lease of life. It takes the elements of the original and magnifies them 100 times using the production duo’s signature synths and vocoders.

Sunset People (Hot Chip Dub)

Hot Chip have taken this electronic dream of an album track and slowed it down to match Ms Summer’s sultry vocals telling the story of Hollywood glamour and despair. I really like this reworking; it has a sadness that lingers behind the lyrics of ‘Sunset People’.

On The Radio (Jacques Greene Remix)

Oh so deep, complete with a rumbling bass, cut up vocals, some nice stabs and melodic piano break. A sentence you would never believe would go hand in hand with Donna Summer’s On The Radio, until now. Absolutely love this.

Last Dance (Masters at Work Remix Short Version)

In my opinion, if MAW lend their name to anything it’s going to be good. Summery, horns, strings, DISCO… just ARGH. This isn’t very succinct but it’s all I can sum up when it comes to their Short Version of’ Last Dance’. Love, love, LOVE.
